How to pass the Utah knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Utah manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Utah law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Utah written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 25 20 correct (5 mistakes allowed) 16 years
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. An applicant who has never been licensed takes a closed book test of 50 questions. A previously licensed applicant takes an open book test of 25 questions. All written knowledge tests require 80 percent and are not timed. First time applicants must also pass the online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam with 100 percent.

Motorcycle. The motorcycle learner permit requires a valid Class D or commercial license, a vision test and the motorcycle written test. The Division does not publish the item count for the motorcycle test, so the figure shown is a working value; the 80 percent pass mark applies to all written knowledge tests.

CDL. Utah requires at least one year of experience as a licensed driver plus a current medical examiner certificate. Applicants under 21 are limited to excepted intrastate operation with a K restriction. The item count and pass mark shown are working values, since the state manual does not publish them.
